Circumstances:
Sent from Port Pirie at the instance of the Mayor, Mr. Fred Gray, as she is enceinte and in feeble health and in utterly destitute circumstances. Has not lived with her husband, Henry Oxlade, for two years but she states that her condition is due to intercourse with her husband who stayed with her a night at the house of Mrs. Veal at Port Pirie about July or August last. She confesses to sexual intercourse with her nephew, Charles Saunders, (haven't worked out where Charles fits into the family tree yet) shortly after the time she says her husband visited her and states that Saunders told her if there is any fuss as to the paternity of the child he would pay for it's maintenance. Says her husband has deserted her and she does not know his whereabouts and that he is a drunken worthless fellow.
On 24 October 1902, from records "Register of Admissions to the Industrial School, Magill and Edwardstown", quote: Admissions to Industrial School "Sentenced until 14 years being a neglected and illegitimate child when mother is unable to take charge and if a home cannot be found".3

On 30 June 1922, Joseph, aged 20, married Grace Uline Thicthener, daughter of Edward Phillip Thicthener, in City Mission Hall in Adelaide, South Australia.4

Joseph died on Tuesday, 24 February 1959, aged 56 years, 10 months and 23 days, in the Adelaide Hospital, Adelaide, South Australia, of a ruptured thoracic aorta.
Before becoming ill he was living at 40 Pirie Street, Solomontown.5

     Hector Oxlade was born about February 1822 in Cadmore End, Buckinghamshire, England, son of Thomas Oxlade and Catherine Green.1

He appeared on the census on 6 April 1841, in the household of Thomas Oxlade in Lane End, Great Marlow, Buckinghamshire, England, age 15, he was an Agricultural Labourer.2

Hector appeared on the census of 6 June 1841 in Lane End, Great Marlow, Buckinghamshire, England, People in the house were Thomas Oxlade, age 50, Independent Means; Sarah, 20, Lace Maker; Hector, 15, agricultural labourer; Ellen, 15 Lace Maker; Thomas 14, potter.2

In 1843 marriage banns for Hector Oxlade and Ellen Finch were published on 18 June, 25 June and 1st July in Holy Trinity Church, Lane End, Buckinghamshire, England.

On 6 August 1843, Hector, married Ellen Finch, daughter of Henry Finch, in Holy Trinity Church in Lane End, Buckinghamshire, England. All made their mark with an X. Witnesses were Richard Ansell and John Sharpe. Hector's profession was "Labourer", Helen's profession was "lacemaker".3

In 1844 he was a brickmaker.

On 24 August 1850 he emigrated from England, bound for South Australia, leaving Plymouth at 6 p.m. on board "Joseph Soames", accompanied by his wife, Helen and daughters, Ann, age 8, Elizabeth, 5 and Sarah, 2. They arrived in Port Adelaide, South Australia on November 23, 1850.4

On 13 April 1855 Hector was living in the Destitute Asylum, Adelaide, South Australia, together with his wife and five children, because he couldn't work.5

money to the amount of £2 10s., the property of
James Tulley. Mr. W. V. Smith appeared for the
prosecutor, and Mr. Pope for the defendant. Dis-
missed. in Adelaide Courts, Adelaide, South Australia.6

Hector was admitted to hospital with panophthalmitis (inflamation of all the tissues of the eyeball) "caused by a blow to the eye". on 14 October 1886 in the Adelaide Hospital, Adelaide, South Australia. He was discharged on 22 Oct 1886.5

He was admitted to the Adelaide Hospital, Adelaide, South Australia, Saturday, 15 February 1902, with leucoma, an eye complaint with white opacity in the cornea. This was usually incurable and he was discharged on February 21. It was recorded that "he had been in receipt of relief at Hindmarsh since 7/4/1881 and has recently made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Norman, at New Hindmarsh. She could not cope and applied to send him to Adealide Hospital. On discharge he was sent to the Destitute Asylum, quite destitute and infirm. Family are all poor".5

He died on Tuesday, 11 March 1902, in the Destitute Asylum, Kintore Avenue, Adelaide, South Australia.7,8

Hector was buried on 13 March 1902 in the Hindmarsh Cemetery, Hindmarsh, South Australia.9

She died on Monday, 5 December 1921, aged 76 years, 3 months and 18 days, in Hutchinson Street, Torrensville, South Australia, of senile decay.3
