Life Events

     George Henry North was born on 13 July 1861 in Greenpatch, South Australia, Of interest is the name of the person who registered the birth, Donald Sinclair. He was a son of George and Lydia's employer, son of George North and Lydia Vosper.2

On 4 November 1884, George, aged 23, married Eliza Elizabeth Valkema, aged 16, daughter of Bernard Teaden Valkema and Elizabeth Bryant, in the residence of George North, North Park in Musgrave County, South Australia. The minister was Reverend G. H. Blackmore and the witnesses were George's brother Hero Clair North and Henry Dack, kangaroo hunter.3

On 9 August 1886, he bought Section 122, hundred of Pearce, County Musgrave, a total area of 128 acres at a cost of £128, under the "South Australian Land Purchases by Credit Selection" scheme, whereby land could be bought by paying 10% of the value on purchase, the balance payable at the end of four years.4

On 21 October 1886 George was the registered owner of a horse and cattle brand, certificate no. 10316, to be used on the property Hill Crest Farm, Elliston, South Australia.4

On 12 January 1900 he George was appointed as a Special Contable in Elliston, South Australia.4

On 21 January 1904 he was again appointed as a Special Constable in Elliston, South Australia.4

He died on Friday, 18 June 1926, aged 64 years, 11 months and 5 days,at home in 82 Melbourne Street, Lower North Adelaide, South Australia, of Bright's disease and uraemia (kidney failure).5

George was buried in the West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide, South Australia, in the Catholic Section of.6

Life Events

     Eliza Elizabeth Valkema was born on 5 August 1868 in Unley, South Australia, daughter of Bernard Teaden Valkema and Elizabeth Bryant.1

On 24 May 1881, when she was 12 years old, she saw her sister Mary drown off Point Sir Isaac, Coffin Bay, South Australia.2 (See here for more.)

On 4 November 1884, Eliza, aged 16, married George Henry North, aged 23, son of George North and Lydia Vosper, in the residence of George North, North Park in Musgrave County, South Australia. The minister was Reverend G. H. Blackmore and the witnesses were George's brother Hero Clair North and Henry Dack, kangaroo hunter.3

She lived in 65 Stanley Street, North Adelaide, South Australia, in 1930.4 By 1935 she had moved to 137 Melbourne Street, North Adelaide, South Australia.4

At the time of her death she had been living at 82 Melbourne Street, North Adelaide.

She died on Thursday, 19 February 1942, aged 73 years, 6 months and 14 days, in St Georges Private Hospital, Fitzroy Terrace, Prospect, South Australia, of a cerebral haemorrage and pneumonia.5

She was buried in the Catholic Section of the West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide, South Australia.6

     Bernard Teaden Valkema was born about 1831, son of Bernhardt Valkema.

On 19 February 1863, Bernard, married Elizabeth Bryant, daughter of Thomas Bryant, in Holy Trinity Church, North Terrace, Adelaide, South Australia. Wakefield Barton and Jane Newton were witnesses of the wedding. Bernard's occupation was listed as "gardener".1,2

On 5 August 1868 he was a hawker living in Unley, South Australia.2

In January 1872 he placed an advertisement in the paper:

In 1874he was a fruiterer in O'Connell Street, North Adelaide, South Australia.4

In 1875 he signed a petition "respectfully requesting" that the Hon. Thomas English, M.L.C. "allow yourself to be nominated as a candidate for the office of Mayor at the forthcoming election". In a three-way battle Mr. Caleb Peacock was elected Mayor.3 He died on Thursday, 9 August 1877, in O'Connell Street, North Adelaide, South Australia, of albuminaria and hydrops carditis, at home.5

Bernard was buried on 10 August 1877 in the North Road Cemetery, Nailsworth, South Australia, plot No. 462, path 11 sth.6

Elizabth was widowed with the death of her husband on 9 August 1877.4

Following her husband's death on Thursday, 9 August 1877 she continued to carry on the fruiterer business he had been running in O'Connell Street, North Adelaide, South Australia, until she remarried.5

On 21 July 1879, Elizabeth, married Alfred George Gregory, son of Thomas Gregory, in St John Church in Laura, South Australia.1

She was on board the ship "Spindrift" when her daughter Mary Valkema drowned on 24 May 1881 off Point Sir Isaac, Coffin Bay, South Australia.4

She died on Tuesday, 11 January 1927, in Ivy Street, Solomontown, South Australia, from senile decay and heat exhaustion. Her death certificate said she was 94 years old.3

Elizabeth was buried on 12 January 1927 in the Port Pirie Cemetery, Port Pirie, South Australia.6

     Mrs. Elizabeth Gregory (94); for many years a resident of the Nelshaby district, but who has recently been living with relatives in Solomontown, died suddenly yesterday morning. She seemed to be as usual when she drank a cup of tea at 5 o'clock, but two hours later she was found dead in bed. Her demise was hastened by the great heat. (Edit: the previous few days the temperature in Port Pirie had been 108-110 fahrenheit (42-44 centigrade.))

     Mary Valkema was born on 12 August 1864 in Crafers, South Australia, daughter of Bernard Teaden Valkema and Elizabeth Bryant.1

On 24 May 1881 aged 16 years, 9 months and 12 days, she accidently drowned off Point Sir Isaac, Coffin Bay, South Australia. Her place of residence at time of death was North Adelaide, South Australia. A 45 year old man, Adolph Dickmann, captain of the vessel, also drowned while trying to save her.2
