George Haines

Life Events

     George Haines was born on 7 July 1844 in Devizes, Wiltshire, England, son of James Haines and Hannah Flower.

He was christened on 4 August 1844 in Poulshot, Wiltshire, England.1

George Haines accompanied his parents James Haines and Hannah Flower on their Emigration from Plymouth, Devon, England, to South Australia on 26 December 18492 and he arrived in Port Adelaide, South Australia, on 30 March 1850.3

On 12 March 1868, George, aged 23, married Johanna Miriam Bawden, daughter of William Bawden and Maria Arthur, in Christ Church in Kapunda, South Australia. The witnesses were George Bawden and Fanny Lord.
George and Joanna had the two seats of honour. On Joanna's immediate left sat Fanny Lord and next to Fanny sat Uncle George Bawden, and next to him sat the twins, Emma and Harriett. On the immediate right of the bridegroom sat Hannah at George's special request, Thomas Cannell had willingly and gallantly surrendered to Hannah the seat that the groomsman would normally be expected to occupy.4,5
In 1874 he was a farmer in Allens Creek, South Australia.6

On 24 July 1877 he purchased land under the South Australian scheme known as the "Strangeways Act", where settlers could purchase land on credit, with 20% deposit and the balance payable at the end of 4 years.

He bought Section 465 Hundred of Mundoora, County Daly, an area of 475 acres at a cost of £475.7

George was widowed with the death of Johanna on 24 April 1890 near Port Broughton, South Australia.5,8

On 26 June 1897, George, aged 52, married Elizabeth Locke Levett, daughter of Francis Findon Levett and Margaret Bennett Martin, in Wesleyan Methodist Parsonage in Adelaide, South Australia. One of the witnesses was W.A.R. Casely of Adelaide.9 On Tuesday, 24 August 1897
HAINES-LEVETT.- On 26th June, at Adelaide, by Rev. R. S. Casely, George Haines, of Mundoora, to Elizabeth Locke, fifth daughter of the late Francis Findon Levett, of Portland, Victoria, Great-granddaughter of the late Sir Francis Levett, London, England, and neice of the late Baroness von Roemer, St. Leonards, Hastings, England.10
On 23 July 1930 he died, aged 86, from heart disease in Adelaide, South Australia. Prior to his death he lived at 17 Davis Street, North Adelaide.8

George was buried on 26 July 1930 in the Payneham Cemetery, Payneham, South Australia.8

Life Events

     Johanna Miriam Bawden was born in 1846, daughter of William Bawden and Maria Arthur.

On 12 March 1868, Johanna, married George Haines, aged 23, son of James Haines and Hannah Flower, in Christ Church in Kapunda, South Australia. The witnesses were George Bawden and Fanny Lord.

She died near Port Broughton, South Australia, on 24 April 1890, from rupture of the liver sustained in an accident when a horse shied and tipped over a dray load of fencing wire, trapping her underneath. She was 44 years old.2,3

Johanna was buried on 25 April 1890 in the Port Broughton Cemetery, Port Broughton, South Australia, in plot 85.4 A memorial to Johanna can be found at Payneham Cemetery, Payneham, South Australia, with her husband George.5

On 14 October 1891, Alice, aged 21, married Edward Gardiner, aged 31, son of John Gardiner and Jane McHugh, in Wesleyan Church in Mundoora, South Australia. The officiating minister was Reverend C. H. Nield and the witnesses were the groom's brother, Albert E. Gardener and Alice's Uncle, James Haines.2

Alice died on Saturday, 13 October 1934, aged 64 years, 11 months and 12 days,at home at 127 Wattle Street, Fullarton, South Australia, from acute pulmonary oedema.3

     Edward Gardiner was born on 23 March 1860 in Meadows, South Australia, son of John Gardiner and Jane McHugh.

On 14 October 1891, Edward, aged 31, married Alice Maria Haines, aged 21, daughter of George Haines and Johanna Miriam Bawden, in Wesleyan Church in Mundoora, South Australia.      Harry Haines was born on 13 June 1871 in Allens Creek, South Australia, son of George Haines and Johanna Miriam Bawden.1

On 20 September 1916, Harry, aged 45, married Marguerite Pearl Aiken, aged 31, daughter of Hugh James Aiken and Catherine Thirza Wood, the residence of H. J. Aiken in Booleroo Whim, South Australia. Witnesses were W. R. W. Graham, farmer of Brinkworth, a cousin of the bride, and the bride's sister Ruth Aiken, of Booleroo Whim.2

He died on Wednesday, 13 November 1940, aged 69 years and 5 months, in Booleroo Centre, South Australia, of a coronary occlusion.3

Harry was buried on 14 November 1940 in the Booleroo Centre cemetery, Booleroo Centre, South Australia, by Rev Longbottom.4

Life Events

      Fanny was also known as Annie Louisa Haines. She was born on 22 August 1872 in Allens Creek, South Australia, daughter of George Haines and Johanna Miriam Bawden.1

On 23 May 1900 Fanny was married to William John Shearer, son of William Pottinger Shearer and Martha Tregea, in Methodist Church, Mundoora, South Australia, by Reverend George Willis Kendrew. The witnesses were Albert George Shearer, Blacksmith and Fanny's sister Matilda Priscilla Haines.2

She died on Tuesday, 3 September 1946, aged 74 years and 12 days, in Prospect, South Australia, of a coronary thrombosis and arteriosclerosis. Prior to her death she had been living at 78 Braund Road, Prospect.3
