Hugh had an obituary in "The Register" of Wednesday 5 October 1927
The death occurred at his residence, Napperby, on Friday, of Mr. Hugh Bawdon (sic), for nearly 40 years a resident of the Pirie district, and formerly a well-known officer in the Education Department. He was within a fortnight of his eightieth birthday.
Mr. Bawdon, who was born in England, came to Australia, and worked in the Moonta mines and at other places. He worked hard at his studies at night and with the exception of one year spent at the Teachers' Training College, was self taught. He had charge of several important schools during his long period with the Education Department.
His first school was at Shelford, from which place he went to Woodchester, and afterwards to the Moonta Mines School. A year at the training college (under the late Mr. Hartley) followed, and then he was given the position of head teacher at Riverton, where he remained for five and a half years. Other schools of which he had charge were Clare, Port Augusta, and Port Pirie West. He went to the latter school in 1889 and remained there till 1897, when he retired and took a block at Napperby.
He continued to take a great interest in education up to the time of his death, and was regarded as an authority on astronomy. He was formerly a captain in the volunteer force, and while at Riverton he started the rifle club. Mr. Bawdon was married twice, to Miss Hutchinson (of Moonta) who died a long time ago and later to Miss Gilbert, of Upper Sturt, who predeceased him by three years. He was for many years a Freemason and was a Past Master of the Port Augusta Lodge. The following children (all by the first wife) survive:— Messrs. Arthur (Solomontown), Walter (Napperby) and David Bawdon (New Zealand), Mrs. Fisher (Eurelia) and Mrs. W. E. N. Laver (Port Pirie).5
