Life Events
Elsie Martha Blacksell was born on 28 May 1920 in Naracoorte, South Australia, daughter of Victor John Blacksell and Alice Holly Vickers.1In 1940 she was working in the Renmark Hospital, I assume, as a student nurse.2
On 15 December 1942 it was reported in "The Narracoorte Herald" that she had passed her final examination as a nurse, while attached to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.
The same paper further reported, on 16 April 1943, that she had "taken up duties at the Pinnaroo Hospital."2
On 31 May 1944, Elsie, aged 24, married Gordon Douglas Paech, aged 23, in Church of England in Pinnaroo, South Australia,
From "The Naracoorte Herald"
The wedding of Miss Elsie M. Blacksell, daughter of Pte. and Mrs. Vic Blacksell, of Naracoorte, was solemnised at the Church of England, Pinnaroo, on May 31, by Rev. Bayley, to Gordon Paech, youngest son Mr. and Mrs. Paech, "Sunset," Pinnanoo.
The bride entered the church with her father. She was dressed in a white crepe dress, with a train and wedding veil. She was attended by her only sister (Shirley), who was dressed in pink. The bride's bouquet was composed of cream roses with maiden hair fern, whilst the bridesmaid carried a bouquet of pink roses, with fern.
The bridegroom was attended by his brother, Mr. Norman Paech. The hymn "The "Voice that Breathed O'er Eden" was sung. During the signing of the register a friend sang "My Heart's Desire." As the bride left the church a lucky horseshoe was placed on the bride's arm by a young neice of the bridegroom.
A reception was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Westpharland (cousin of the bride). The guests were received in the hall by Mrs. V. Blacksell and bridal party. A buffet supper was partaken of in the lounge.
Telegrams and many useful presents were received, including cheques. The bride cut the cake, which was made by Witford's bakery and iced by Mrs. Buick. The usual toasts were honoured.
The bride was dressed in a blue knitted frock, trimmed wih navy, for going away. Their future home will be at Pinnaroo.2
