Extracted from the "Southern Cross", 19 Novmber 1943"
Church of the Immaculate Conception, Port Adelaide, was the scene of a pretty naval wedding on Saturday, November 13, when Merle Marie, third daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. D. McEvoy, of Cheltenham, was married to Charles (R.A.N.V.R.), only son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Matson, of Graytown, with Nuptial Mass.
The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a gown of ivory satin, trimmed with lace at the neck and waistline, and ending in a long train. The inevitable "something borrowed" was the veil, which was lent by the bridegroom's mother. This was worn in a halo effect, with a cluster of orange blossoms. She carried a sheaf of white Christmas lilies and pink carnations, and was attended by ner three sisters and the sister of the bridegroom, dressed alike in full-skirted amethyst taffeta frocks with insertions of lace at yoke, waistline and cuffs. The bridesmaids carried bouquets of mixed flowers in pastel shades.
The naval atmosphere was evident throughout, as the best man, Rob Kemp, and the groomsman, Noel Bumford, were members of the R.A.N.V.R.
The Rev. Fr. Molloy, O.Carm., officiated, assisted by V. Rev. Prior Meehan. "Ave Maria" was. sung very beautifully by Miss Mary Worthington-Eyre, accompanied on the organ by Miss Vera Dowd. After the ceremony a reception was held in St. Mary's Hall. The bride's mother, who received the guests, was effectively gowned in black, relieved with touches of pink, and a spray of carnations. The bridegroom's mother wore a charming ensemble of navy and white, with a spray of roses.
The bride left for the honeymoon in a travelling suit of light grey, with a blue hat swathed in veiling and blue and brown accessories.3
