     George Herbert Edwards was born on 30 December 1910 in Tamworth, New South Wales, Australia.1

George began military service on 12 July 1940 in Wayville, South Australia, when he enlisted in the Australian Army. his service number was SX8707. When he died at Tobruk, he was a Corporal with 2/43 Australian Infantry Battalion.2

On 23 November 1940, George, aged 29, married Elsie Edith Osborn, aged 22, daughter of Herbert Bertram Osborn and Margaret Atkinson Gray, in Grote Street Church of Christ in Adelaide, South Australia.1

He died on Tuesday, 22 July 1941, aged 30 years, 6 months and 22 days, in Tobruk, Libya.1

George was buried in the Tobruk War Cemetery, Libya.1

Life Events

     George William Britten was born on 22 April 1918 in Horsham, Victoria, Australia, son of Charles Richard Britten and Jean Isobel Miller.1

George began military service on 18 June 1940 in Caulfield, Victoria, Australia, when he enlisted in the Australian Army. His service number was VX21868. He was put into the 2/22 Australian Infantry Battalion and, in April 1941 the battalion was sent to Rabaul, New Britain. Known as the Lark Force, they spent several months constructing defences and training for operating in a tropical environment. However, on January 23 the Japanese forces invaded New Britain, outnumbering the Lark Force. Along with many others George was captured on 3rd Febuary and executed the next day.1,2

He died on Wednesday, 4 February 1942, aged 23 years, 9 months and 13 days, in Papua New Guinea.1

George was buried in the Rabaul (Bita Paka) War Cemetery, Rabaul, Papua New Guinea.1
