Rex Whaddon Parsons OBE was born on 13 May 1894 in Wayville, South Australia, son of Stephen Parsons and Miriam Sarah Trigg.On 21 August 1924, Rex, aged 30, married Ethel Mary Disher, aged 37, daughter of John Ralph Disher and Annie Maria Dutton, in residence of John Ralph Disher in Aldgate, South Australia.
He died on Saturday, 10 June 1961, aged 67 years and 28 days, in North Adelaide, South Australia, Prior to his death he had been living in Glenunga.1
Rex was cremated on 13 June 1961 and his cremated remains were buried in the Centennial Park Cemetery, Pasadena, South Australia, South East, Rose Bed S11, Position 024. (The licence expired in 2011.)2
Rex Whaddon Parsons OBE (1894 - 1961)
Rex Parsons was born in Adelaide and studied engineering at the SA School of Mines and Industries and the University of Adelaide from which he received his bachelors degree (1914).
Following one year as a cadet with the Adelaide Electric Supply Company he enlisted in the AIF and served with the Royal Australian Engineers in the Australian Mounted Division in Palestine and Syria.
After the war he worked with the British Thomson-Houston Coy at Rugby and for a short period with GEC, New York State. Back in Australia in 1921 he was appointed head of the Electrical Engineering Dept at the SA School of Mines and Industries. He obtained his Master's degree in 1926.
After a sabbatical working on the Central England section of the British Electricity Grid he was appointed Principal of the SA School of Mines and Industries in 1940.
Rex was Chairman of the Adelaide Division of the Institution of Engineers, Australia in 1943 and President of the Institution in 1955.
He was awarded an Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1953 for his services to technical education. He is remembered by many for his frugal management and his leadership in matters related to Technical Colleges and the training of engineers.
