Stephen Richard Couzner

Life Events

     Stephen Richard Couzner was born on 31 July 1857 in Cockatoo Valley, South Australia, son of Stephan Couzner and Martha Nobbs.

On 10 October 1878, Stephen, aged 21, married Jane Elizabeth Talbot, aged 19, daughter of Henry Talbot and Susannah Hobbs, in the residence of the bride's parents in Appila, South Australia. The officiating minister was Wesleyan minister, Reverend Thomas Edmeades. Witnesses were Sara Smith and Philip Smallacombe, both of Appila.2

On 14 August 1879 Edward was a witness at the Marriage of Edward Dansie and Elizabeth Talbot in the residence of Mr. Talbot, Appila, South Australia.2

On 16 October 1928 Stephen and Jane celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary, at home, with their family (see newspaper report from "The Advertiser")
A GOLDEN WEDDING AT JAMESTOWN.


     Two well known residents of Jamestown, Mr. and Mrs Stephen Couzner, celebrated their golden wedding at their residence, 'Moyletown.' Jamestown, on Wednesday. They were married by the Rev. Thomas Edmeads. Wesleyan minister, at Appila, on October 10, 1878. Mr. Couzner was born at Sandy Creek, near Gawler, in 1856. and Mrs. Couzner (nee Miss Jane Talbot) was born at Melrose in 1858.
     A large family gathering, including all the sons and daughters assembled. The supper tables were prettily decorated and arranged. A large wedding cake graced the principal table. The toast of the 'happy couple'' was proposed by Mr. T. Clarke (son-in-law). who expressed the best wishes to Mr. and Mrs. Couzner, sen., and trusted that there were many more years before them in which to enjoy life together. The toast was supported by Messrs. W. Rosser. W. A. Campbell. A. E. Couzner, and W. Hardacre. Mr. P. C. Couzner presented Mr. Couzerr with an inscribed wallet containing notes on behalf of the sons, and Miss D. Williams, on behalf of the daughters, presented Mrs. Couzner with a pretty handbag. On behalf of the grandchildren Master Fred Rosser and Mrs. J. L. Dunn presented tbem with a gold-trimmed embroided quilt, Mr. and Mrs. Couzner both responded. The pleasant evening was terminated with 'For they are jolly good fellows.'
     Those present were Messrs. F., G., W., P C. Couzner (James- town) A C Couzner (Port Pirie). and J. Couzner (Spalding), Mesdames W. Rosser, J. Rosser, D. Williams (Jamestown). W. Hardacre (Port Pirie) T. Clarke (Salisbury). There are 48 grandchildrcn and 12 great-grandchildren.3
He died on Saturday, 14 August 1943, aged 86 years and 14 days, in Jamestown, South Australia, of myocardial failure and an enlarged prostate.4

Stephen was buried on 16 August 1943 in the Jamestown Cemetery, Jamestown, South Australia, in plot CFDG28.5

     Henry Alfred Couzner was born on 17 August 1880 in Appila Yarrowie, South Australia, son of Stephen Richard Couzner and Jane Elizabeth Talbot.1

On 31 March 1909, Henry, aged 28, married Charlotte Elizabeth Gale, aged 20, daughter of Mark Gale, in St James CE Church in Yacka, South Australia.2

He died on Saturday, 4 September 1954, aged 74 years and 18 days, in Jamestown, South Australia.3

Henry was buried on 8 September 1954 in the Jamestown Cemetery, Jamestown, South Australia, by Reverend Giles, plot AD16.4

The death of Mr. Henry Alfred Couzner occurred here on September 4. He was 75. Mr. Couzner had lived at Jamestown for 36 years. He is survived by a widow, three daughters and five sons.5

On 11 November 1904, Stephen, aged 23, married Edith Silver Bradock, aged 15, daughter of Edwin Bradock and Minna Hillegeist, in St James Church in Jamestown, South Australia.

In 1915, on his son Don's death certificate, Stephen was a carrier.2

He was widowed when Edith died 2 May 1933 in Jamestown, South Australia; he was 52 years old at the time.3,4

In 1947, Stephen, married Rita Smith (nee Heness), daughter of Robert Benjamin Heness and Amelia Matthews.3

He died on Saturday, 28 March 1964, aged 83 years and 23 days, in Jamestown, South Australia.5
