Life Events

     William Hamilton Fairlie was born on 8 June 1835 in Kirkmichael, Ayrshire, Scotland, son of John Fairlie and Isabella Hamilton.2

On 22 April 1859, William, aged 23, married Margaret Tate, aged 20, in Straiton, Ayrshire, Scotland.2

On 12 May 1876 he was appointed as a Foot Constable in the South Australian police force.3

Between 10 June 1878 and 8 September 1879 he was the licencee of the "Rising Sun Inn", Kensington, South Australia.3

Between 8 September 1879 and 19 June 1882 he was the licencee of "Nixon's Hotel" in 160 Hindley Street, Adelaide, South Australia.4

On 9 March 1880 he was reprimanded by the Adelaide Licensing Bench for "supplying liquor to intoxicated persons" in the "City Hotel". He was also admonished for allowing "prostitutes and their associates to congregate about the doors, which, though not a penal offence to permit, nevertheless lowers the character of the neighbourhood, and is an annoyance to the inhabitants and passers by".3

On 11 February 1893 he advertised several properties for sale
BARGAIN.—FOR SALE, six-roomed HOUSE, bath, stable, near Central Market; suit cab man or market man. Also, nice property, Market street, North terrace, six-roomed House, bath; and two three-roomed Cottages.—W. H. Fairlie, Halifax street.3
Between 9 June 1893 and 1899 he was a Justice of the Peace (JP), and often sat with magistrates, and heard cases, the Police Court, Adelaide, South Australia.3

On 30 November 1893 he had an advertisement in "The Advertiser"

On 26 May 1895 he attended a a Levee at Government House, Adelaide, South Australia. A Levee was a formal reception put on by the Governor to show allegiance to the Crown. Up until the Second World War it was a men-only event.3

On 2 December 1895 he stood as a candidate in the election for Councilors on the Adelaide Council, representing the Young Ward. Again, he was unsuccessful.3

He died on Thursday, 5 July 1900, aged 65 years and 27 days, in Ayrshire Cottage, Halifax Street, Adelaide, South Australia.5

William was buried in the West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide, South Australia.6
