OPEN VERDICT
Death of W. T. Fairlie
DISTURBANCE IN HOUSE
At an inquest held today Mr. C. L. Mathews (Assistant City Coroner) found that William Thomas Fairlie died at Adelaide Hospital on March 14 as a result of injuries to the brain and haemorrhage, but that the evidence did not show the cause of the injuries.
The coroner was assisted by Detective E. L. Francis and Constable V. V. Kennedy.
The evidence showed that deceased, with George James Fairlie (his brother), William Arthur Donaghey, Francis William Smith, and Kevin Joseph Brady went to a house at No. 9 North terrace on the night of Friday, March 1.
At the house a fight occurred in the passage, but the men were not clear regarding what had happened, as they were under the influence of liquor.
After the fight deceased complained that he had been struck on the head with a bottle. On March 11 he was taken to Adelaide Hospital.
An X-ray photograph of the head of deceased showed a fracture on the right side of the skull and an examination after death revealed injuries to the head sufficient to have proved fatal.
Evidence was given by Gregory James Fairlie (of 18 David street, Adelaide), Dr. J. G. Sleeman (medical superintendent, Adelaide Hospital), Gladys Veronica Allen (married, who lived at 9 North terrace on March 1), Francis William Smith (chairmaker, of 24a Russell street, Adelaide), Mary Maria Roberts (married, of 9 North terrace), William Arthur Donaghey (salesman, of 16 Elder street, Adelaide), Ivy Myrtle Bruce (married, of 9 North terrace), Willam Frederick Bruce, Thomas Weston, Mary Weston, and Kevin Joseph Brady.4,5
William was buried on 20 March 1929 in the West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide, South Australia, in Road 2, path 5, W, site 3.4
