Before 1945, Leonard, married Jean Lilian Gohl, daughter of Albert Wilhelm Ernst Gohl and Annie Cecelia Staker.

He died on Saturday, 2 January 1988, aged 75 years and 5 days, in Adelaide, South Australia. He had been living in Ungarra4 and he was cremated at Centennial Park Cemetery, Pasadena, South Australia, on 4 January 1988, and his ashes were placed in East Area, Rose Bed E48, position 025.4
