He embarked on HMAT "Corsican" 28th May 1916. On reaching England he was transferred to 22nd Field Artillery Brigade. On 26th March 1917 he was sent to France via Southampton and promoted to Gunner.
On 25th September he was wounded in action (mustard gas bomb) and hospitallised in Rouen, France, before being repatriated to an Exeter Hospital, with a slight sickness, until 31st December when he was given leave until 14th January 1918.
He reported for duty in London on the 14th, as required, but a few days later was found to have contracted a venereal disease while on furlough and was sent to the euphemistically named hospital, the Australian Dermatological Hospital, in Bulford, Wiltshire, where he was treated for 89 days before being declared fit to resume his duties.
On 21st November 1918, just ten days after hostilities had ceased, he was sent back to France, possibly to assist in clean-up and return of servicable machinery, as he was transferred to the 5th Field Artillery Battery. However, after a couple of months he became ill again with a fever "of unknown origin", and was again hospitalised. He rejoined his unit and a month later they were sent back to England and, a few days later, returned to Australia on SS "Rio Negro", disembarking in Melbourne on 22nd July 1919.3
