Driver Dies In Crash
A man was killed when a semi-trailer crashed into a bridge and caught fire near Crystal Brook yesterday morning.
The dead man was Frederick Hart Makin, 48, married, sharefarmer, of Dorset Vale.
Mr. Makin was driving the semi-trailer, which struck the railing of a bridge over Rocky River on the Crystal Brook-Narridy road about four miles south of Crystal Brook.
The semi-trailer sheared off six feinforced concrete posts and part of the prime mover hung over the bridge.
The complete motor and gearbox were torn from the prime mover and crashed about 10m ft. to the bed of the river.
The semi-trailer caught fire and rescuers unloaded most of the 220 sheep in the trailer while two fire units fought the blaze.
About 30 sheep died in the fire or were detroyed later.
The Crystal Brook EFS unit and an E & WS Department party controlled the fire. The accident happened a 6:30 a.m. and traffic was held up until 11:40.
An E & WS Department mobile crane removed the wreckage from the bridge.
Senior Constable B. J. O'Malley, of Redhill, is in charge of enquiries.6
