Life Events

     George Edward Clifton was born on 13 October 1875 in Bright Lands, South Australia, son of George Clifton and Elizabeth Hannaford.^1,2

On 6 December 1899, George, aged 24, married Emily Louisa Tregeagle, aged 29, daughter of William Trethowan Tregeagle and Sarah Haines, in the residence of Thomas Lees in Hindmarsh West, South Australia.¹

He died on Thursday, 9 February 1939, aged 63 years, 3 months and 27 days, in the Hospital, Adelaide, South Australia, Prior to his death he had been living in Salisbury.³

Life Events

     William Fisher was born on 7 March 1839, son of Edward Fisher and Susannah Smith.

To date I have been unable to find when he emigrated to South Australia, but on 28 May 1861 the following notice was published in "The South Australian Advertiser":-.¹ On 9 September 1862 William, aged 23, married Anne Isabel Edmonds, aged 19, daughter of William Bennett Edmonds and Elizabeth Ann Evans, in Christ Church, Kadina, South Australia. By Reverend Canon Russe. The witnesses were the father of the bride, W.B. Edmonds, Clerk of the Court, Kadina & Alfred Hallett, banker, Kadina.

From "The Register Personal Notes", 15th September 1862 Between 1871 and 1872 he he was the joint proprietor of the "Southern Argus", in Strathalbyn, with Joseph Elliott. The partnership was disolved in 1872.² In May 1877 he was appointed station manager at Powell's Creek.⁴

When Annie died on 23 August 1877, in the Telegraph Quarters, in Palmerston, South Australia, he was 38.^5,6

On 21 December 1877 he had a notice in the "Government Gazette" and "Northern Territory Times and Gazette": On 18 August 1885 he was witnes to the Marriage of Archibald Maxwell Jaffrey and his daughter Elizabeth Susan Fisher in Christ Church, Kapunda, South Australia.³

In 1893 he was postmaster in Overland Corner, South Australia.⁸

He died on Saturday, 8 January 1910, aged 70 years, 10 months and 1 day, in South Terrace, Adelaide, South Australia, of heat apoplexy and cardiac failure at Miss Basham's Private Hospital.^9,6

On 2 February 1825, Edward, married Susannah Smith, daughter of William Scott Smith, in St Botolph in Aldersgate, Middlesex, England. . Witnesses were James Hurtle Fisher and William Henry Fisher.²

He died on Monday, 3 July 1876, in Little Bowden, Market Harborough, Leicestershire, England. His death notice appeared in the "Leicester Chronicle" on 8 July 1876.^1,3

     Susannah Smith was born about 1806 in Aldersgate, Middlesex, England, daughter of William Scott Smith.²

On 2 February 1825, Susannah, married Edward Fisher, in St Botolph in Aldersgate, Middlesex, England. . Witnesses were James Hurtle Fisher and William Henry Fisher.¹

She died on Thursday, 22 January 1880, in Little Bowden, Market Harborough, Leicestershire, England.³

     Elizabeth Susan Fisher was born on 24 June 1863 in Kadina, South Australia, daughter of William Fisher and Anne Isabel Edmonds.

On 26 August 1876 Elizabeth arrived in Palmerston on board 'Claude Hamilton':- from the Northern Territory Times & Gazette of that date;
"Mrs. Fisher and two daughters in the cabin; Mr Roche and Miss Lane in the steerage."¹

On 18 August 1885, Elizabeth, aged 22, married Archibald Maxwell Jaffrey aged 37, son of John Smart Jaffrey and Catherine Lauder, in Christ Church in Kapunda, South Australia. Witnesses were her father William Fisher of Telegraph Depot, Overland Corner and her sister Gertrude Annie Fisher, of the same address.²

On 28 May 1891 she was living in Quorn, South Australia.³

She died on Thursday, 12 September 1901, aged 38 years, 2 months and 19 days, in Gawler, South Australia, from pulmonary tuberculosis.^4,5

Life Events

     Archibald Maxwell Jaffrey was born on 29 January 1848 in Port Daniel, Quebec, Canada, son of John Smart Jaffrey and Catherine Lauder.¹

On 18 August 1885, Archibald, aged 37, married Elizabeth Susan Fisher aged 22, daughter of William Fisher and Anne Isabel Edmonds, in Christ Church in Kapunda, South Australia. Witnesses were her father William Fisher of Telegraph Depot, Overland Corner and her sister Gertrude Annie Fisher, of the same address.²

On 28 May 1891 he was appointed, by proclamation in the Government Gazette, to be a Justice of the Peace in Quorn, South Australia.³

In 1901 he was an engineer in Barossa Valley, South Australia.⁴

He died on Sunday, 21 September 1930, aged 82 years, 7 months and 23 days, in North Unley, South Australia.^5,4

Probate was granted on his estate on 13 October 1930 to the Mercantile Trade Protection Association. The estate was valued at £4,558 (2013 value approx. AU$2,000,000.00.)

     Gertrude Maxwell Jaffrey was born on 29 August 1886 in Quorn, South Australia, daughter of Archibald Maxwell Jaffrey and Elizabeth Susan Fisher.¹

To my knowledge, Gertrude wasand were never married.²

She died on Thursday, 27 January 1955, aged 68 years, 4 months and 29 days, in Prospect, South Australia,² and she was cremated at Enfield Memorial Park, Clearview, South Australia, on 29 January 1955.³

     Isabel Maxwell Jaffrey was born on 4 June 1888 in Barkby Holt, Quorn, South Australia, daughter of Archibald Maxwell Jaffrey and Elizabeth Susan Fisher.

In September 1918 she passed her examinations for Invalid Cookery in Adelaide School of Mines, Adelaide, South Australia.¹

In October 1919 she was registered with the Royal British Nurses Association.¹
