Child:
- Archibald Maxwell Jaffrey+ b. 29 Jan 1848, d. 21 Sep 1930
Life Events
John Smart Jaffrey was born on 9 June 1819 in Stirling, Fifeshire, Scotland.1,2In September 1846, John, aged 27, married Catherine Lauder, aged 23, in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.3
In November 1853 John and Catherine and family, immigrated Canada to South Australia. They arrived in Victoria on board the "Norma" and then caught the steamship "Havilah", on it's first voyage to Port Adelaide. Some of his family had already settled in South Australia and he joined them and they ran a successful mercantile business.2
He died on Wednesday, 7 October 1903, aged 84 years, 3 months and 28 days, in Payneham, South Australia.1
John had an obituary in "The Advertiser" on 8 October 1903
Mr. John Smart Jaffrey, who died at Rugby, Wellington-road, Payneham, was a colonist of 50 years, having arrived in the State in November, 1853.
He was born at Stirling, Scotland, on June 9, 1819. After leaving his native land he spent about seven years in Canada. He went to Melbourne in a vessel called the Norma, and came on to Adelaide at once by the first trip of the steamship Havilah.
With his brothers, who were earlier colonists, he was for some years engaged in mercantile pursuits. Later he was for a time interested in pastoral pursuits, but he took no active part in the industry.
For about 35 years he had lived a retired life in different parts of the suburbs, and for some years he had resided where he ended his days. His wife predeceased him (at the age of 76) four years ago. He left five sons and one daughter, all of whom are married but one son, and are living in the State; also 19 grandchildren.
Although in his 85th year he was very active, and was about as usual up till Tuesday last. On Sunday he drove himself to church in the city. On Tuesday he was not well, but objected to have a doctor. However, he seemed worse at night, and Dr. Shepherd was called. He passed away quietly on Wednesday morning. The cause of death was acute dyspepsia, which brought on heart failure.2
