Life Events

Horace Gilbert Fairlie was born on 12 August 1900 in Islington, South Australia, son of William Hamilton Fairlie and Annie Bridget Power.1

Horace began military service on 25 July 1916 in Adelaide, South Australia, when he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force.
He gave his name as William Anthon, birth place Hobart, Tasmania, Mother Alice Anthon. After being sent overseas, to a large camp at Codford, Wiltshire, on the 16th January 1917 he signed a declaration stating his true name and his correct mother's name and address. This was following a letter from his mother to the Army, declaring that he enlisted under a false name because she objected to his joining because of his age.
It appears he didn't handle the discipline of Army life very well as he disobeyed orders at least twice, and on the second occasion was sentenced to 14 days detention and docked 15 days' pay.
the day after he finished his detention he was put on the "Nestor" for return to Australia. When he disembarked he was discharged from the AIF for being underage.2

On 10 August 1922, Horace, aged 21, married Florence Eliza Walker, in Methodist Manse, South Terrace in Adelaide, South Australia.3

He died in 1986, aged 85 years, in New South Wales, Australia.4

Horace was buried in the Palmdale Cemetery, Palmdale, New South Wales, Australia.5
