THE LATE MR. JOSEPH BADENOCH
NEWS of the death on July 19 of Mr. Joseph Badenoch, of Prospect, formerly of Pirie and Balaklava, was received with regret by many old friends here. He was born at Carey's Gully, near Uraidla, and was brought up to gardening pursuits. Later he was engaged on the railways at Oodnadatta, and spent two years in the experimental garden at Hergott Springs, where he assisted in planting the first date palms which became such a feature of that arid district. He was also associated with the work of putting down the Government bore at Lake Harry.Returning to the more settled parts of the State, he entered the bakery trade and in 1891 started business at Pirie. This enterprise proved successful, for he secured a large share of the shipping trade, as well as becoming a popular caterer for all kinds of picnic and social functions. He was a good, all-round sport, and for more than 10 years was a member of the old Pirie Racing Club Committee.
He married in 1892 Miss Mary Temperley Shepley, whose father was a pioneer of Coromandel Valley. Mrs. Badenoch and three daughters survive.
Mr. Badenoch's removal to Balaklava was due largely to the influence of his old friend Mr. James Dick, formerly a well-known agriculturist of Wandearah, who disposed of his holding there in 1909 and purchased farm property at Mount Templeton.
When Mr. Badenoch decided to start a business at Prospect he sold out to Mr. J. R. Mayes, now of Pirie.4
