Abel had an obituary published in "The Register" on Tuesday, 15 September 1925
Mr. Abel Shepley, of Mount Barker, whose death occurred at Mount Barker on Monday, was in his ninety-second year. He was born at Duking, Clichester, England, in 1834. In 1848, with his father, four brothers and two sisters, he came to South Australia in the ship Baboo.
At Port Adelaide, Mr. J. Broadbent, of Cherry Gardens, took charge of the new arrivals, and the following day the sisters and three brothers tramped 18 miles to Cherry Gardens. Mr. Shepley's first labour there was to tie sheaves of hay as they came from the scythes, for Mr. J. Downing (father ot the Downings, of Mount Barker). He next worked for Mr. Field, who owned a 40-acre block in the vicinity, and kept four employees. Three of these dug with spades, and planted four and a half acres in a month, and Mr. Shepley claimed to be the best man in South Australia with the spade.
He and his brother went to the Victorian gold diggings in 1851. Mr. A. Shepley at once took a pick to 'Poor Man's Gully,' and dug till he reached the gravel. By night he had got 3 oz, gold. That was all he got there, but at another hole he found rich ground. Then the rains came, and every hole in the gully was filled with water.
His brother, discontented, compelled him to return with him to South Australia. On the Port Lincoln to Port Augusta track Mr. Shepley put down many wells, and worked on both sides of the Flinders Range, mainly at bullock driving and horsebreaking. After seven years in the north he removed to Coromandel Valley, where he married, and was employed at Murray's biscuit and jam factory. He lost his first wife at the Valley, and married Miss Lucy Wickens (daughter of the baker at the factory). Afterwards they moved to Balhannah, where they lost all they had on the farm. Bugle Ranges was their next venue, and they remained there until 10 years ago, when they moved into Mount Barker.
The surviving family consists of:- Messrs. A. Shepley (Bugle Ranges), E. Shepley (Broken Hill), F. Shepley (Port Pirie), H. Shepley (Edwardstown), and Mesdames P. O'Malley (Mount Barker), J. Badenoch (Prospect), and E. Yates (Wistow).5
