George Stancliff was born on 11 October 1847 in Toxteth Park, Lancashire, England.1

He was baptized on 5 December 1847 in Toxteth Park, Lancashire, England.1

On 12 June 1882, George, aged 34, married Fanny Hobbs, aged 30, daughter of George Hobbs and Harriet Ann Moore, in Menindee, New South Wales, Australia.1

He died on Friday, 28 March 1913, aged 65 years, 5 months and 17 days, in Broken Hill South Mine, Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia, when he became entangled in machinery.

From Broken Hill "Barrier Miner" Saturday 29th March 1913
"Another Man Killed at South Mine"
"A mill hand the victim"
"George Stancliff, a Millhand employed in the South Mine was fatally injured this morning. The deceased, who was about 60 years of age, was at work at the Mill, oiling certain parts of the crane. A chain broke and struck him on the head and he overbalanced and fell in the vicinity of the driving wheel.
It seems he was drawn into the grip of the driving wheel and whirled around. His injuries were severe and he was taken to hospital. There he quickly sank and died about noon.
The deceased was a resident of Bonanza Street, Broken Hill South. The inquest will be held at 10 A.M. tomorrow."

The verdict of the inquest was "Death by accident."1,2

A memorial to George can be found at West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide, South Australia.3
