Lorna Hilda Wilhelm1,2
(1925 - 2016)
Life Events
Lorna Hilda Wilhelm was born on 2 November 1925 in Wards Belt, South Australia.2From "The Chronicle", 26 December 1940
Great courage was shown by Lorna Wilhelm, 15, of Lincoln street, Corryton, in rescuing her 10-weeks-old baby cousin from burning at the home of her grandmother, Mrs. Clara Maria Modra, Breaker street, Holmesdale, on Saturday. Lorna Wilhelm, Mrs. Edna Modra, 28, ot Breaker street, Holmesdale, the baby's mother, and the baby, are undergoing treatment at a private hospital for burns and shock. It is reported that they are recovering.
Mrs. Modra was melting floor wax and ochre in a saucepan over a gas stove when the mixture caught alight, setting her clothes on fire. The baby was sleeping in a bassinette, which also caught alight.
Lance Wilhelm, 12, brother of Lorna Wilhelm, picked up the baby, and ran towards the door. He fell over a chair, however, and the infant rolled under the table. The mother was unable to reach the child, and Lorna, who was washing up, threw a bucket of water on the flames. She forced her way through the fire, and, picking up the baby, ran to the kitchen door. She left the child with Mrs. Modra, sen., and telephoned for a doctor. The girl later collapsed.
The Fire Brigade arrived soon afterwards, and the fire was quickly extinguished. The kitchen walls and furniture were damaged.
The Chief Officer of the South Australian Fire Brigade (Mr. J. J. Whyte) paid a tribute to the bravery of Lorna Wilhelm in rescuing the baby. He said that he intended to inform the Royal Humane Society of the girl's courage.3
