Mary Doreen Dutton was born on 6 March 1896 in Kingston, South Australia, daughter of Edward Ernest Dutton and Helen Ida Mary Venn. To he family and friends Mary was known as "Mollie."Mollie Dutton was born in Adelaide. Her parents opposed her desire to nurse. At the age of 28 she began training at the Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH) in 1924. After a short term in charge of the Magill ward of the RAH, Mollie Dutton enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Nursing Service and as a matron served at RAAF hospitals in Darwin and Laverton, Victoria.
In 1943, while in Darwin, she receive a citation for the mention in despatches. The award says that "Matron Dutton was posted last year as matron of a northern medical base.
"Her energy and powers of organisation were responsible for the smooth operation of the unit, and her efficiency, example and tireless efforts have been an inspiration to the staff.
"Under primitive conditions and in an area subjected to many enemy bombing raids she worked unceasingly for the sick and wounded. Her unselfishness and cheerful personality had a splendid effect on the patients and staff."
After the war Miss Dutton returned to the RAH and was Sister in Charge of Bice Ward until 1954, when she retired to care for her elderly mother.
She died on Friday, 24 September 1993, aged 97 years, 6 months and 18 days, in Daw Paw Repatriation Hospital, Daws Park, South Australia.1
