In 1943, while in Darwin, she receive a citation for the mention in despatches. The award says that "Matron Dutton was posted last year as matron of a northern medical base.
"Her energy and powers of organisation were responsible for the smooth operation of the unit, and her efficiency, example and tireless efforts have been an inspiration to the staff.
"Under primitive conditions and in an area subjected to many enemy bombing raids she worked unceasingly for the sick and wounded. Her unselfishness and cheerful personality had a splendid effect on the patients and staff."

After the war Miss Dutton returned to the RAH and was Sister in Charge of Bice Ward until 1954, when she retired to care for her elderly mother.

She died on Friday, 24 September 1993, aged 97 years, 6 months and 18 days, in Daw Paw Repatriation Hospital, Daws Park, South Australia.1
