     Henry Ernest Lord was born in 1895 in Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia, son of William Henry Lord and Ada Emma Rawlins.¹

On 22 November 1917 Henry began his millitary service when he enlisted in the Australian Infantry Force. His Service Number was 3722. He was in the 3rd Light Horse Brigade, 9th Light Horse Regiment, 34th Reinforcements. He embarked at Sydney on 30th April 1918 aboard the HMAT "Port Darwin". He disembarked at Suez on 8th August and, on arrival, was admitted to hospital with mumps. When discharged from hospital he was allotted to the General Service Reinforcements at Moascar and the Engineers Training Unit. He was in Palestine when he contracted malaria in October 1918. On 3 July 1919 he embarked on H. T. "Malta" to return to Australia and was discharged on 15th November 1919, with the rank of 2nd Corporal.

On 16th April 1942 he again enlisted in the Australian Army, in the Broken Hill Volunteer Defence Corps. His service number was S76502. He was discharged on 2 December 1945 with the rank of Corporal in the Broken Hill Detached Company 6th Battalion in Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia.²

On 4 November 1920, Henry, married Hilda Mumford, aged 29, in St Anne's Church in Aldinga, South Australia.³
