MAN DEAD IN CAR.
Discovery at Long Reef.
HOSEPIPE ATTACHED TO
EXHAUST.

A man gathering blackberries in Griffith's Park, Long Reef, at 5 a.m. yesterday, came across a closed motor car with the engine running and smoke issuing through one of the half-opened windows. The car was on a side track in a secluded part of the bush, and, when the man peered inside, he saw the body of a man who was later identified as Thornley Wilfred Franks, 29, of Lincoln Street, Campsie, lying on the back seat. A hosepipe was attached to the end of the exhaust pipe, and the other end of the pipe was drawn through the half-opened window of the car.
When the Manly Ambulance had taken the body to the Manly Hospital, a doctor there expressed the opinion that Franks had been dead for some hours. Police ascertained that at 7.30 o'clock last night Franks purchased six gallons of petrol at a garage in Manly, stating that he was on his way home to Campsie.
Most of the petrol had been consumed when the car was discovered, but as the engine was still running, carbon monoxide fumes were still being carried through the pipe into the car.
Franks was married, with one young child. He arrived from New Zealand only a few months ago, and was employed as a traveller by a city firm.4
