William and Elizabeth spent most of their married life in Aylesbeasre and Newton Poppleford district, five of their children were born there. Whilst he lived in Devon, William worked mainly as and agricultural labourer. In 1857 William had a fracas with the local Parson and was told to leave the village. William and Elizabeth and their children, moved away and eventually settled in Bristol and had one more son in 1860. Elizabeth died the following year.

Three years later William married Ellen Fisher, the daughter of a ship's carpenter. At this time William worked as a haulier. He later went into the butchery business and aquired his own butcher's shop.2
