Life Events
Reverend Alexander Hannavelle Le Marchant was born on 6 November 1863 in 8 Stenton Terrace, Willowwalk East, Bermondsey, Greater London, England.1On 29 June 1896, Alexander, aged 32, married Jessie Whitehead Kirton, aged 27, daughter of Robert Hill Kirton and Martha Emma Jesper, in Hendon, Middlesex, England.2,1
Alexander, age 37, appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 in 26 Stonebridge Place, Willesden, Middlesex, England, as head of the household, aged 38. He was a Congegational Minister.
Also in the house at the time was his wife Jessie, age 32; Myrtle Hurry aged 10, his stepdaughter; Colin Hurry age 7, stepson; Christine Le Marchant, daughter aged 3; Denis Le Marchant, son aged 1; visitor Caroline Kirton (sister-in-law) age 25; and Domestic servants Ellen Abram 26, Florrie Abram 23 and May Hughes aged 14.3
He died on Monday, 28 March 1938, aged 74 years, 4 months and 22 days, in the Newlands Nursing Home, Bolton, Lancashire, England.1
Alexander was buried on 31 March 1938 in the Congregational Cemetery, Belmont, Lancashire, England.4
His estate was probated on 5 May 1938 in London, England, to Jessie Whitehead Le Marchant, widow, Denis Hannavelle Le Marchant of no occupation, and William Hanscomb, chartered accountant. Effects value £4147 6s. 8d (approx. 2013 value = AU$1,063,000.00.)5
The headstone of Alexander Hannavalle Le Marchant and Jessie Whitehead Le Marchant (nee Kirton), is in the cemetery of what was originally the English Congregational Church in the village of Belmont, up on the Lancashire moors some five miles north of Bolton.
The English Congregational Church subsequently merged in 1972 with the Congregational Churches of Wales and Scotland and together with the Presbyterian Church of Great Britain created the United Reformed Church which still exists today.
Alexander was a minister ordained into the Congregational Church in 1888. Between then and 1905 he looked after three separate churches in London before moving with Jessie to Bolton. By all accounts, Jessie was a constant stalwart by the side of Alexander throughout the fifty years of his ministry.
In 1932 they left Bolton and moved to Belmont where they ran the Congregational Church until Alexander died in 1938.
Sadly the Bolton and the Belmont churches have both been demolished for what has proved to be pretty dreadful redevelopments.
