James appeared on the census of 5 April 1891 in 3 Victoria Street, Mitcham, Surrey, England, head of house, age 55, bootmaker. At home with him was his wife Emma, 58 and daughter Ellen, 32, a Dressmaker.⁶

On 31 March 1901James appeared on the census in 182 James Rd., Croydon, Surrey, England, age 66, a Widower, Boarder, Lady's Bootmaker. The head of house was Eleanor Roberts, age 68, widow, Milk Manageress and Dairywoman. Also boarding there were Annie Benfield, 56, Dressmaker and Edith A Langridge, 16, Apprentice to dressmaker.⁷

He appeared on the census on 2 April 1911, in the household with Ellen Sparkes in 3 Russell Terrace, Mundesley, Norfolk, England, He was enumerated as being 74 years old, a widower with no occupation and he was deaf.⁸

He died about September 1917, in Mundesley, Norfolk, England.²
