HE STILL HAS TIME TO RAISE FINCHES, SWEET PEAS
Grocer-mayor has full life.
Finches, sweet peas, groceries, and mayoral duties have vied for a share of Mr. Charles Veale's time in the eight years he has been Mayor of West Torrens.
His responsibilities as civic leader of this wideflung local govern ment area and his busi ness interests in the grocery trade haven't left much time for at tention to his aviary. And he hasn't been able to do so much lately in his favorite hobby of raising new varieties of sweet peas. "I wouldn't have missed my experience in local government," said the 52 year-old mayor. "It's a wonderful education."
Has own shop
For 15 years until re cently Mr. Veale was a metropolitan traveller in wholesale groceries with G. Wood, Son & Co. Ltd. For 18 years before that he travelled for a preserving company.
A while ago he decided to open a shop on his own account at Henley Beach road. Brooklyn Park. He is installing the in side fittings. His friends say he has turned carpenter in pretty good style.
He's a willing worker.
The town clerk, Mr. Vernon Shephard, seeing a man clearing away debris from the footpath in front of the row of shops, thought he looked a likely man for council work. On stepping closer he found it was his mayor.
Always keen on gardening, Mr. Veale has shown sweet peas for many years and has raised a lot of new varieties. One he named Joyce Veale after his daughter, now Mrs. Murray Shard, of Port Pirie. This variety is regarded as one of the best in Aus tralia.
For eight years Mr. Veale was secretary of Thebarton Floral Society. He plays in the second division for Lockleys Bowling Club, and is on the committee.3
