Charles Thomas Smith1
(1867 - 1919)
Father | Charles Thomas Smith b. a 1841 |
Mother | Georgina Elizabeth Welden2 b. a 1847 |
Life Events
Charles Thomas Smith was born on 11 April 1867 in Gawler, South Australia, son of Charles Thomas Smith and Georgina Elizabeth Welden.1He was a Harnessmaker, working for Holden & Frost, Grenfell St., Adelaide. The building was, until recently, occupied by Harris Scarfe Ltd. It is currently (2012-2013) being developed into a larger shopping complex.3
On 4 July 1919, Charles, aged 52, married Edith Mary Jane Clarke, aged 46, daughter of James Thomas Clarke and Mary Ann Eliza Aspenwall, in the residence of C T Smith, 6 Bowden Lane in Adelaide, South Australia. The officiating minister was Reverend C. S. Hornabrook. Witnesses were E. Lane and C. Frost.
Unfortunately, Charlie died the next day from tuberculosis; which leads me to believe that perhaps, she had been nursing him and he married her so she could inherit his estate, if any. Another (newspaper) report states that they were married in HER place of residence, 4 Bowden Lane, which was next door (something that needs more research.)1
He died on Saturday, 5 July 1919, aged 52 years, 2 months and 24 days, in Adelaide, South Australia, the day after marrying Edith Oxlade (nee Clarke). He had been suffering with pulmonary tuberculosis for many years.4 Charles was buried on 7 July 1919 in the West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide, South Australia, in Plan 3, Row Number: 12, Site Number: 62
