Margaret Ellen Lyons was born about 1917.1In June 1939, Margaret, married Jack Selwyn Allen, son of Lancelot Charles Allen and Amy Higgs, in Holy Name Church in Island Bay, New Zealand.1 In July 1939
From the "Evening Post", 1st July 1939
The bride, who was escorted by her eldest brother, Mr. J. Lyons, wore a blue mantle over her gown of pearl slipper satin, the bodice with its heartshaped neckline being softly ruched and finished with clusters of orange blossom. The long sleeves which were pleated at the shoulders fitted tightly at the wrists and pointed over her hands. The skirt which formed a long train was ruched to form three large scollops and was trimmed with orange blossom. The bride's fine tulle veil (which was worn over the face on entering the church), billowed from a cluster of cream orchids to form a second train. She carried a sheaf of white gladioli and maidenhair fern. Her only ornament was a small pearl cross (the gift of the bridegroom).
The three bridesmaids, the Misses Sheila and Doreen Lyons (sisters of the bride) and Kathleen Sharp (a cousin), wore frocks of cream, ripple chiffon with heart-shaped necklines, the bodices being tucked on the shoulders. The puff sleeves were balanced by full flowing skirts, and the trio carried sheafs of mauve thrifts, violets, and maidenhair fern. Their shoulderlength chiffon veils were gathered in place by mauve orchids. Ruched mittens were also worn.
Mr. Cleve Allen (Gisborne) attended his brother as best man, and the altar boys were Masters Joseph and Patrick Lyons (brothers of the bride). The ushers were Mr. Phillip Eton and Messrs. William Hayes and James Lyons (cousin and brother of the bride).
As the bride was leaving the church she was presented with two horseshoes by Eileen Sharp (her cousin) and Margaret Boyes.
The bride's mother, assisted by Mrs. Allen, received the guests at the Masonic Hall, Berhampore. Mrs. Lyons wore a prunella wool ensemble trimmed with gold, with a matching hat and veil, and a shoulder spray of autumn flowers. The bridegroom's mother was wearing a mulberry silk marocain frock designed with an accordion-pleated panel in front and having gold metal clips at the neck. A brown hat and fur coat with a shoulder spray of autumn flowers completed her ensemble. Among the many guests were the bride's grandmother, Mrs. W. Lyons, Waipawa, who specially visited Wellington for the occasion.
In the early evening Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Allen left for their honeymoon, the bride wearing a moss green English worsted coat over a navy frock, a brown stole, and navy accessories.
Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Allen will make their future home in Gisborne.1
