He was baptized on 8 February 1807 in Chilton Foliat, Wiltshire, England.2,3On 28 October 1828, Peter, aged 21, married Mary Ann Hobbs, daughter of Thomas Hobbs and Martha Stagg, in Ramsbury, Wiltshire, England. By Marriage Banns. The Officiating Minister was Thomas G. P. Atwood and the witnesses were James Sweeper and Eliza Crute. Peter Withers and Thomas Atwood signed their names and Mary Ann Hobbs, James Sweeper & Eliza Crute "made their mark".4
In the Courts, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England, on 27 December 1830, Peter was sentenced to death, later commuted to transportation for life to the Australian penal colonies, for being a part of the "machine breaking swing riots" of Wiltshire.
