     He was baptized on 8 February 1807 in Chilton Foliat, Wiltshire, England.2,3

On 28 October 1828, Peter, aged 21, married Mary Ann Hobbs, daughter of Thomas Hobbs and Martha Stagg, in Ramsbury, Wiltshire, England. By Marriage Banns. The Officiating Minister was Thomas G. P. Atwood and the witnesses were James Sweeper and Eliza Crute. Peter Withers and Thomas Atwood signed their names and Mary Ann Hobbs, James Sweeper & Eliza Crute "made their mark".4

In the Courts, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England, on 27 December 1830, Peter was sentenced to death, later commuted to transportation for life to the Australian penal colonies, for being a part of the "machine breaking swing riots" of Wiltshire.

On 14 April 1831 he left Portsmouth on board the convict ship "Proteus", arriving in Hobart Town on 3rd August 1831.

On 9 April 1836 Peter applied to marry Ann Wade, a free person (taken from "Index to Convict Applications to Marry" ) in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.

On 30 May 1836, Peter, aged 29, married Ann Wade, in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.

By October 1840 he had an allotment in Davey Street, Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.

On 21 February 1846 he, along with several others, were given approval to "extend their residence within the Australian Colonies and New Zealand" instead of being confined to Tasmania, as in the original pardon.5

On 17 March 1846 he had an advertisement in the "Colonial Times", Hobart
Desirable Homestead.

TO BE SOLD or LEASED, that well known COTTAGE and delightful GARDEN belonging to Peter Withers, at the top of Davey-street, near Mr. J. Thomson's Buildings. It will be sold cheap. For particulars, apply to Peter Withers, on the premises

He put the property up for auction on 8th January 1849, and had an advertisement in "The Courier" on 30 December 1848

It appears that he failed to sell the property, as it was still in his name in 1873, which was after his death.5

He died on Saturday, 27 January 1872, aged 64 years, 11 months and 19 days, in Adelaide, South Australia.6
