The Herder was a 460 ton barque, under Captain J. F. von Hagen, which sailed from Bremen, Germany, on 5th June 1851. The were 251 passengers on board, said to be mostly miners, and they reached Port Adelaide on 21st September 1851.
Ancestors on board the Herder were Georg Christian Ludwig Hillegeist (known as Louis), his wife Henrietta (nee Maschmeyer) and their daughters Minna and Johanne (known as Hannah)
