About 1935, Leslie, married Jean Christina Pinkie.1

Leslie began military service on 23 February 1940 in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, when he enlisted in the Australian Army. His service number was VX15057. On the 18th April 1940 he left Australia, disembarking in Palestine. Following several visits to hospital he was declared "medically unfit for service for a period greater tham 6 months". He was returned to Australia and was discharged on 23 August 1942.2

He died in 1947, aged 34 years, in Swan Hill, Victoria, Australia.1

     BENDIGO apprentice, Gilbert Britten, 17, was seriously injured in a sensational race smash at Woodend yesterday.
     He was admitted to Lynburn private hospital, Woodend, suffering from a probable fractured skull, lacerations to lip and nose, and severe bruising of the left hip.
     His mount. Lepama, fell shortly after the start of the Flying Handicap when racing about.fourth. Several horses galloped over the fallen rider.
     Britten ls apprenticed to Bendigo trainer Eric Armstrong, and was only recently granted a permit to ride in the city.
     He has built up a good reputation on country tracks with 27 winners in the last 12 months.
     Stewards who opened an inquiry into the fall adjourned it until Britten is well enough to give evidence.2
He died about 2001, in Swan Hill, Victoria, Australia.1
