On 25 November 1916 Joseph enlisted in the AIF in Black Boy Hill, Western Australia, His service number was 3423. He embarked at Fremantle on board the HMAT "Miltiades" on 19 January 1917 and on March 28th marched into the 13th Training Battalion at Codford, Wiltshire, UK.
On July 16th proceeded to France, via Plymouth, and joined the 51st Battalion.²

He died on Friday, 28 September 1917, aged 19 years and 7 months, in Ypres, West Flanders, Belgium.¹

Joseph was buried in the Westhoeke Ridge Small Cemetery, Zonnebeke, Belgium, and later, re-interred in the Hoog Crater Cemetery, Ieper, Belgium.^2,3
