     William Robert Thompson was born on 5 December 1912 in Chandada Station, South Australia, son of William Archibald Thompson and Lillian Gertrude Wheaton.1

On 3 September 1932, William, aged 19, married Thelma Alice Jean Horton, aged 20, in St Theodore's Church in Rose Park, South Australia.2

On 26 January 1983 he was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM). He was in the Commonwealth list for "service to the community". He also received the National Medal, which is presented for, quote "diligent long service to the community in hazardous circumstances, including in times of emergency and national disaster, in direct protection of life and property".3

He died on Wednesday, 24 July 1991, aged 78 years, 7 months and 19 days, in Streaky Bay, South Australia.4

William was buried on 24 July 1991 in the Streaky Bay Cemetery, Streaky Bay, South Australia, by Reverend D. Brine.4
