     Joseph Francis Cummings was born in 1827 in Manchester, Lancashire, England, son of Francis Cummings.1
In August 1843 Joseph came to South Australia in a whaling ship, which he and another sailor, Sam Harris, deserted in Fowlers Bay, on the West Coast of South Australia. They walked overland, through previously unexplored country, eventually finishing up in Port Lincoln. They were arrested for deserting ship but, because they had kept notes of their journey and gave favourable descriptions of the country around Mount Wedge, they escaped penalty.1
On 8 June 1861, Joseph, married Annie Morris Oakley, aged 30, daughter of David Dring Oakley and Annie Morris, in St Paul's Church in Adelaide, South Australia. The minister was Reverend Canon Russell and the witnesses were Annie's sister Sarah Vickers of Alberton and R. Fisk of Flinders Street, Adelaide.2

On 24 May 1893 at the annual athletic sports day, Sheringa, South Australia, Joseph won the Old Man's Race. He also won it the following year, 1894.3

On 4 January 1895 in Sheringa, South Australia, "The house of Mr. Cummings was struck by lightning, and being built with a thatched roof, it was with great difficulty the fire was beaten out before much damage was done." from The Advertiser, 8 January 1895.3

He died on Wednesday, 12 June 1907, aged 80 years, in Pine Hut Farm, Hundred of Way, South Australia, from carcinoma of the hand and general carcinosis.4

Joseph was buried in the Sheringa Cemetery, Sheringa, South Australia, by RTM Radcliff.5

     Annie Morris Oakley was born on 21 June 1830 in London, Middlesex, England, daughter of David Dring Oakley and Annie Morris.2

She was baptized on 13 September 1840 in St John of Jerusalem Church, Hackney, Middlesex, England, At the time, her family were living in Martha Street, Bethnal Green.2

Annie Morris Oakley emigrated on 1 October 1857 from in London, England, on board the "Stamboul", under Captain J. H. Smith. She accompanied her married, sister Sarah Vickers.

They arrived in Port Adelaide on 1st. February, 1858.3

On 8 June 1861, Annie, aged 30, married Joseph Francis Cummings, son of Francis Cummings, in St Paul's Church in Adelaide, South Australia. The minister was Reverend Canon Russell and the witnesses were Annie's sister Sarah Vickers of Alberton and R. Fisk of Flinders Street, Adelaide.4

She died on Sunday, 28 November 1920, aged 90 years, 5 months and 7 days, in Sheringa, South Australia, from severe haemorrhage and shock following laceration of the scalp.5,6

Annie was buried on 30 November 1920 in the Sheringa Cemetery, Sheringa, South Australia.5

In 1893 he was appointed as a Special Constable in Elliston, South Australia.1

On 7 June 1897, Leo, aged 29, married Eliza Rouse, aged 22, in the res. of Dr. Carter in Elliston, South Australia.2

In February 1917 he registered a 22.5 h.p. Ford vehicle in Sheringa, South Australia.3
