Life Events

Jane (Jeanie) Fairlie was born on 16 August 1864 in Crosshill, Ayrshire, Scotland, daughter of John Fairlie and Rebecca Barton.

On 30 March 1887, Jane, aged 22, married Arthur McArthur, aged 22, son of Amelia McArthur, in Wesleyan Parsonage in Yankalilla, South Australia.1

On 14 May 1938 an article appeared in "The Adelaide Mail"
Souvenirs From Government House

MRS. McArthur, of Yankalilla, possesses some interesting souvenirs of her childhood at Government House in the days of Governor Fergusson and Governor Musgrave. Mrs. McArthur's maiden name was Fairlie, and her parents came out with Sir James and Lady Fergusson from Kilkerran, their family home in Scotland.
Sir James sent his retinue before him to get Government House ready for him, and the Duke of Edinburgh, who arrived in Adelaide both on the same day - February 15, 1869.
Mrs. McArthur's father was associated with the late Dr. Holtze in the Botanic Garden, as they were both horticultural experts and enthusiasts.
She possesses several viceregal photographs, also a letter from Miss Musgrave and a ball given to her by Gen. Sir Charles Fergusson, afterwards Governor-General of New Zealand.
The McArthur's are an old established family of the Second Valley district. Mr. McArthur has been chairman of the Yankalilla District Council for many years.
His son, Allan, was killed at Gallipoli. His five daughters have exceptional musical talent. They are: - Mrs. Archie Campbell, of Myponga; Mrs. Cahill, Miss Myrtle McArthur, who is also talented in painting; Nurse Jean McArthur, district trained nurse at Farina; and Miss Doreen McArthur, whose dance band is well-known throughout the southern districts.2

She died on Thursday, 20 September 1951, aged 87 years, 1 month and 4 days, in Yankalilla, South Australia.
