Life Events

     Sir Guy Spencer Calthrop was born on 26 March 1870 in Uppingham, Rutland, England, son of Everard Calthrop and Mary Ann Edmonds.1 Sir Guy Spencer Calthrop was also called "Guy."

He appeared on the census on 2 April 1871, in the household of Mary Ann Edmonds in Leicester Rd, Uppingham, Rutland, England, as son, aged 1.2

In 1886 he joined the London and North Western Railway (LNWR) as a Cadet and in 1892 was appointed outdoor assistant to the Superintendent of the Line at Euston. In 1901 he beame personal assistant to Sir Frederick Harrison.3

Guy, age 31, appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 in Savoy Farm, Denham, Buckinghamshire, England, in the home of his fiance's brother, Richard Morton, a Farmer. He was aged 31 and his occupation was Railway Official.4

About June 1901, Guy, married Dame Gertrude Margaret Morton, in Hendon, Middlesex, England.4,1

In 1902 he left the LNWR to take up a position as General Superintendent of the Caledonian Railway in Scotland and in 1908 was promoted to General Manager.3

In 1910 he left Britain to become General Manager of the Buenos Aires and Pacific Railway.

In 1913 Calthrop returned to Britain and the LNWR, where he was appointed General Manager of the LNWR in succession to Frank Ree, who died in 1914. During the First World War, he was seconded by the Government, who appointed him Controller of Mines. For this service, Calthrop was made a baronet of Croxley House, Hertfordshire in 1918. He died less than a year later and his baronetcy became extinct upon his death.3

He died on Sunday, 23 February 1919, aged 48 years, 10 months and 28 days, in 43 Brooke Street, Mayfair, London, England, after suffering from influenza for two weeks and then contracting pneumonia.1,5

Guy was buried in the Chorleywood Road Cemetery, Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire.6

Probate was granted on his estate on 8 April 1919 in London, England, to Harry Clyde Calthrop, Banker and Everard Godwin Thorne, Solicitor. Effects £15,300 17s 11d (2013 value = approx. AU$3,863,00.00.)5
