On 26 March 1874, James, aged 26, married Mary Kerr, aged 24, daughter of Hugh Kerr and Dorothy Reynoldson, in St Luke's Church in Adelaide, South Australia.1

He died on Tuesday, 1 September 1931, aged 84 years and 22 days, in the Hospital, Adelaide, South Australia, Before his hospitalisation he had been living in Parkside.3
