Life Events

     Hero Clarence North was born on 23 May 1895 in Colton, South Australia, son of Hero Clair North and Rosina Ann Boylan.1

On 13 March 1912Hero won the Sheffield Handicap race at the St Patrick Day Sports, Colton, South Australia.2

In 1916 he was a labourer in South Australia.3

On 13 March 1916 Hero enlisted in Australian Imperial Forces in Adelaide. He was put in the 2nd Reinforcements of the 5th Pioneer Battalion of the Light Horse. His Regimental No. was 1914.

His description was: Age 22yrs 9 months; Height, 5 feet 8 1/2 inches, Weight, 153 pounds; Chest Measurement. 34-36 1/2 inches; Complexion, medium; Eyes, Hazel; Hair, Dark Brown; Religion, Catholic.

On 17th April 1916 they left Fremantle on the "Aenas", disembarking in Suez, Egypt on 16 May for more training.

Leaving Egypt on 21st June the group arrived in Marseilles, France on 29th June. They were put into active service on 2nd September 1916 at Etaples.3

On Sunday, 5 November 1916 he died, aged 21 years, 5 months and 13 days, in France, of gunshot wounds in the chest, during the final days of the "Battle of the Somme".3

Hero was buried on 5 November 1916 in the Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L'Abbe, France, Grave Ref. V. F. 12.3

     Mary Ellen North was born on 31 July 1901 in Colton, South Australia, daughter of Hero Clair North and Rosina Ann Boylan.1

On 3 January 1925, Mary, aged 23, married Eric Cecil William Kelly, aged 23, son of Charles Foolks Kelly and Jane French, in St Mary of the Angels Catholic Church in Port Lincoln, South Australia. The witnesses were James and Cecilia North, brother and sister of the bride.

     A pretty wedding was celebrated at the Port Lincoln Catholic Church on Saturday, January 3, when Mary, fourth daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. C. North, of Colton, was married to Eric, only son of Mr. C. Kelly, of Wasleys. The church had been prettily decorated. The bride was daintily gowned in an ivory marocain frock, with wreath and veil. Miss Celia North (sister), as bridesmaid, was frocked in lemon marocain with a georgette hat to match. Mr. Jim North was best man. Mr. North gave the bride away. Afterwards he entertained the happy couple and their friends at breakfast.
     The newly-married couple left by the Wandana for their honeymoon midst showers of confetti.2
They moved to Winulta for Eric's first teaching appointment after their wedding and then to Stirling North, where both Eric & Mary were primary school teachers. When Eric died in 1953, Mary moved to Adelaide with her 2 children, where she worked as a teacher at Gillies St. school and later taught crafts to the children at the Spastic Centre on Woodville Rd. Woodville . She bought a house at 46 Levistone St. Seaton Park and lived there until the debilitation of Alzhiemers disease forced her into Acacia Court Nursing Home in about 1984, where she stayed until her death in 1991.3

She died on Friday, 27 December 1991, aged 90 years, 4 months and 27 days, in Acacia Court Nursing Home, Hendon, South Australia.3

Mary was buried on 30 December 1991 in the Cheltenham Cemetery, Cheltenham, South Australia.3

On 3 April 1926, Cecilia, aged 20, married Russell Womersley, aged 21, son of John Harry Cappern Womersley and Mary Ann Walker, in Clifton Hill, Victoria, Australia. The officiating minister was Father Alexander May and the witnesses were Daniel Halliwell and Rose North (bride's sister.)3,4

She died on Friday, 4 June 1999, aged 94 years, 1 month and 9 days.3

     Iris Ann North was born on 20 November 1907 in Colton, South Australia, daughter of Hero Clair North and Rosina Ann Boylan.1

In 1925 Iris taught music in the Kyancutta Hall and organised a concert. "The stage was decorated with streamers and lanterns, then a gasp from the audience as the streamers caught alight. Whilst the rest of us looked on aghast the mighty Rex Pepper made one leap and tore the decorations down and stamped the fire out". Mr Leo Daniels in "A Salute to Pioneers" by Melva G Winter.

On 10 December 1926, Iris, aged 19, married William Clarence Jackson, aged 23, son of Thomas Hugh Jackson and Georgina Miller, in St Aidan's Catholic Church in Colton, South Australia.2

She died on Wednesday, 9 August 1989, aged 81 years, 8 months and 20 days, Her last place of residence was Largs Bay.1

Iris was buried in the Enfield Memorial Park, Browning Street, Clearview, South Australia, in the Catholic section, Row AX, plot 41.3
